Are we putting process over innovation? Let’s explore the impact tool standardization has on a project manager. It will discuss real-life examples of how toolsets: 1) Project Management Integrated tools 2) Resource allocation tools 3) Agile Tracking tools & 4) general templates, impact a project manager or a PMO. Has standardization reduced the creative aspect of managing projects and replaced it with a scripted playbook that dictates what must be followed?
You will explore ways how the project manager can utilize creative means to manage the project and still become a strategic influence in the organization.
You will examine the impact of standardized tools, how it impacts the role of the project manager, and how they feel about their contribution to the organization. You will examine data that reflects the project manager role becoming more administrative and less strategic and how that impacts the responsibilities and job satisfaction of the Project Manager.
You will cover the pros and cons of standardization of tools, templates, and process in a project management office. You will the impact of tools across all aspects of the PM role and the way how the tool has become the driving force behind processes and project reporting.
Dave Davis Senior Project Manager, Ohio Health PMO Dave Davis, PMP, PgMP, & PBA is a practitioner of project and program management and a recognized professional in the field of helping businesses implement change. With over 30 years experience in private enterprise as a manager, project manager, program manager, business analyst, and knowledge manager. Dave holds 3 master’s degrees including an MBA and eBusiness Project Management. He has published many articles and delivered presentations throughout the world; including the PMI Pulse of the Profession. He has held many roles within the Project Management Institute including executive roles at local and national components, serving on Standards committees, and writing questions for the certification exam. Dave currently has an active blog on projectmanagement.com, which drives his PMI influence score of 85 / 100.
As far as a real job, Dave is currently a Project Manager for General Electric focused on implementing the “Digital Thread” combining IT and manufacturing within a Program called “Brilliant Factory”. He is also chairman of the Judy Hug annual Christmas Event. The organization provides a fleece wrap to children who have lost a parent during the year as a reminder that there are people who care. He is also an active member of several other service organizations including: Mobile Meals, ALS Walk, and Nightingale's Harvest.
